About Us

MISSION AND VISION

The Friends of Tygerberg Hills (FOTH) is a community-based organisation that aims to promote local environmental interests, with the aim of protecting of the unique, but threatened Renosterveld of the Tygerberg Nature Reserve.

OBJECTIVES

The mandate of FOTH is guided by the mission statement of The Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA): “to promote public participation in caring for the Earth.”

The objectives of FOTH are to promote the conservation of the Tygerberg Nature Reserve by:

  • identifying, mapping and eradicating alien plants,
  • recording and monitoring populations of indigenous species,
  • propagating plants from seed,
  • conducting outings for the public, and
  • assisting in environmental education

WHAT WE DO

Friends do their bit for the Reserve, its surroundings and other approved projects, by organising hikes, and sharing knowledge with other friends and visitors.

We provide technical skills and manual labour to maintain hiking paths, fire breaks, making sign boards, construct bridges, steps and paths.

We cut down and removed alien vegetation such as Pine, Port Jackson, Bluegum and Rooikrans and others in and around the reserve.

Nature holds the key to our aesthetic, intellectual, cognitive and even spiritual satisfaction. – E. O. Wilson
