July 4th: Lions Talk at Tygerberg Nature Reserve

The presentation is called Wildlife under threat – Lions – the situation of THE African icon. We will look at the situation of the lion from the past till today, both in the wild and in captivity, look at reasons for the drastic decline and how we all can make a difference together. I will also include some information about Panthera Africa and what we do and how we want people to get involved.

Cathrine S. Nyquist (17. October 1979)

Cathrine has lived most of her life in Norway, and came to South Africa for the first time August 2011. What was going to be a volunteer trip of two weeks in-between jobs, ended up changing her whole life. With a degree in Int. Business and Financial Management and working as a commercial real estate broker for 8 years, she decided to jump off the career ladder, move to South Africa and start a big cat sanctuary to rescue the King of Africa and make a difference for the species as a whole. With passion and love, Cathrine and her partner, Lizaene Cornwall, have over the last three years established Panthera Africa Big Cat Sanctuary, which is a true sanctuary  where no breeding, trading or public interaction take place. The project has been up and running for tourists and volunteers since Good Friday 2015, and they are currently taking care of 9 lions, one black leopard, 2 bengal tigers, 3 caracals and 3 jackals. They are currently working on an international rescue mission, and together with international welfare organisations they will continue to rescue and relocate more big cats that are suffering in captivity, to their 40 hectare paradise in Stanford.
